Jim joined the Navy in June 1956. This was part of an All-San Bernardino County enlistment out of Ontario, California. After Boot Camp in San Diego, California Jim attended RM"A" School in Bainbridge Maryland. After graduating Radio School Jim was sent to Hong Kong to meet his ship the USS Onslow (AVP-48) Seaplane Tender. Upon returning to it's home base of Alameda Naval Station, Alameda, California the last stop was Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Since Jim had spent many years assisting his dad Jim, Sr. on the golf course, his knowledge of how to run the golf course was already substantial. Knowing this, the XO of the Onslow, Commander Howard C. Culbreth, made arrangements for Jim to be sent TAD (TEMPORARY ACTIVE DUTY) to Fleet Air Wing II in Hawaii as the Golf Pro at the King Kalakawa Army Golf Course at Schofield Barracks. During Jim's assignment as Golf Professional he made RM2. Jim received an honorable discharge in 1960 and kept his persuit of a golf career and is today a Master Golf Professional.
