I am including this biography of my grandfather even though he wasn’t a sailor in the Navy but was a sailor as a civilian. Grandpa was born in Victoria, Canada and as a boy ran off to sea. He began his seaman apprenticeship as a steward on one of the ships that transported miners to Alaska in 1898. Later he worked as a whaler on the tall ships. It has been said he was out to sea in a heavy storm working on deck when a giant wave washed him overboard. Then with the very next wave he was washed back aboard the ship. A tall tale from a tall ship, but none the less true. James served as a whaler for many years then retired to a nice home in Seattle, Washington.
